Taking the ASVAB is the first step in choosing a MOS. The ASVAB aims to find a recruit's abilities to perform different tasks, and will offer jobs based on a recruit's scores. I found the ASVAB to be relatively easy, but was surprised at the dificulty of some of the questions. If I wasn't such a nerd (I read a lot about just about everything) I feel it would have been much harder. The practice tests definitely help. Links to some practice tests are on the links page.

I took the ASVAB at an air base, one and a half hours away. My recruiter picked me up and we headed out. It was a good chance to talk to my recruiter on a more personal level, where I could ask some questions and get answers, and he could tell some stories of his experience as airborne infantry. Arriving at the base was exciting, as it was a step closer to becoming a soldier. It was a short wait before I was able to take the test, but soon a line formed behind my recruiter and me. Some of these recruits had to wait over an hour, so try to arrive early if you can. I will not go into the test any more, as I don't want to help anymore than the practice tests are allowed to.

The test took around two and a half hours, and after completing it I was able to get my score. I scored an 81, which I was told is pretty decent. My recruiter told me that most people scored 41 so I was happy almost doubling that. With this score I was able to get the MOS 19K that I wanted, although the class was full and my recruiter had to call in to get me a slot. He had tried to convince to me take a special forces MOS, where I would have to qualify and be trained as a special forces team member. I was very much intregued but I had my heart set on 19K.
